Music

Music is at the heart of our school.

At St John XXIII we believe in performance; we feel that music education should be performance-based, rather than knowledge-based.

In the first term of the year we encourage and individual and group performances and teach a broad music curriculum to support this.

We also hold the idea of audience response as paramount to the children’s experience and musical ability and confidence.

Choir

Most of our children sing at least once a day during assemblies, music lessons, hymn and choir practice.

We also have a Parents and Staff Choir who meet regularly to practice and enjoy taking part in events such as the Christmas Carol Concert.

This term we have worked hard to create a fantastic choir which will soon be performing at Westfield’s choir competition on the 4th of December in the central atrium (opposite Marks and Spencer) of the Westfield mall in Shepherd's Bush.

Rather than restrict our musical education to school and classroom, we believe in wider participation through competitions, festivals and public performance.

School of Rock is an opportunity for the children to learn the art of playing in a rock band!

Parents were invited to the School of Rock performance at our good work assembly on Friday 29 November.

Music Pedagogy

We teach class-based music lessons throughout the school. This includes traditional musical theory as well as performance by all the children during the lesson. Children learn the national curriculum music concepts of rhythm, pitch, timbre, dynamics and other musical ideas.

Composition

Next term our focus will be based on composition and performances of children's own works, following on from this term’s emphasis on public performance.

In the spring term we always hold a musical concert and every class will perform a different piece of classical music.

Instrumental lessons

During the school day, our children benefit from group instrumental classes. Piano, guitar and drums are taught. Groups of four or five pupils attend lessons and are trained by our specialist music teacher, Mr. J. Dalledone. Some children have successfully passed their ABRSM instrumental exams and some are preparing to take theirs in Spring and Summer next year.
