PE and Sport Premium

 

The Physical Education curriculum at St John XIII Catholic Primary School provides all pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. We believe physical activity plays a vital role in the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children. In line with the National Curriculum for Physical Education, our programme of study is designed to enable each child to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and lead healthy and active lifestyles.

 

At the end of each key stage, children are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills specified in the relevant programme of study.

 

Lower Phase:

 

September - October: Movement Coordination- Fundamental movement Skills, speed and agility work.

 

November - December: Gymnastics activities and dance- shapes, travelling, jumping, motif and unison.

 

January – February: Tag games, spatial awareness and running coordination (Games Activities Movement Games).

 

February – April: Hand eye coordination - throwing and catching (Games activities coordination games)

 

April – May: Games activities, strike and fielding – hand eye coordination

 

June – July: Skipping, running, jumping, throwing and balancing (athletic activities)

 

 

Upper Phase:

 

September – October: Invasion games - Football & Tag Rugby

 

November – December: Gymnastics Activities – Gymnastics (Apparatus, contrasting actions and counter balancing) Movement

 

January – February: Invasion Games - Netball, Basketball & Skittle ball

 

February – April: Invasion Games - Hockey

 

April – May (Games Activities Strike and Fielding) Tennis, Cricket and Softball

 

June – July (Athletic Activities) Javelin, Long Jump, Throwing, Sprinting and distance running

 

 

 

In addition to our school based lessons:

 

Upper Phase attend a weekly swimming lessons at the Janet Adegoke Swimming Pool

 

Year 6 children are trained to lead play activities through the L2P (Learn to Play) scheme.

 

Year 6 children are given the opportunity to try out a number of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA) during their residential visit to

Marchants Hill where they take part in activities such as Zip wire, Aeroball, various team building activities and a 3hr hike.

 

Upper Phase have coaching in football led by coaches from Queens Park Rangers Football Club.

 

Upper Phase take part in early morning exercise, mixture strength, endurance and flexibility exercises to help enhance cognitive functioning

 

Visit from GB Olympic Athlete Kola Adeyoyin through Sports for School Organisation

 

The children are also given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra-curricular and competitive sporting activities at after school clubs. Their participation in these events fosters qualities such as self-confidence, respect, team spirit, loyalty and self-control. Each year we take part in a wide range of sports competitions including: football, High 5 netball, volleyball, basketball, Tag Rugby, swimming, cricket, indoor and outdoor athletics, cross country, Skittle ball, Softball and Tennis, often meeting with success. Our high quality provision has received national recognition through the Sainsbury’s School Games (silver) award in 2015.   The School also have strong Links with Local Clubs and Sports Associations. We are active members of the following sports associations: Thames Valley Harriers and QPR Football Club.
