Year 4

In Year 4, your children will taught by Mr Bloomfield and supported by our teaching assistant Miss Fernandes and Mr Turner.

We encourage children to reflect on their learning, challenge themselves and make the most of different opportunities offered in school. Through exercising our different learning attitudes (resilience, responsibility, reflection, resourcefulness and reasoning) we aim for children to develop a learning mind set and to understand the skills needed to be a good learner. In the stimulating environments of our classrooms, we establish clear routines and have high expectations of each child to reach their full potential.

Over the Spring term in daily English sessions, children will look at further Myths and Legends and will focus on the story of Beowulf. Children will explore a variety of myths and enjoy the mythical creatures introduced in Beowulf. They will learn these tales and use them as stimuli for creating their own myths and legends. They use the texts as models to help develop their understanding of detailed description in writing and correct grammar.

In Maths, children apply their understanding of the place value of whole numbers and fractions, measures, statistics and shape to real life contexts and learn to work systematically on maths investigations, often testing conjectures and developing reasoning skills. A key focus in Year 4 is learning, consolidating and applying multiplication and division facts.

During the term, children will be investigating Science topics such as the digestive system in ‘Where does all that food go’, and states of matter in our ‘In a State’ topic.

Through the excitement of learning about Invaders and Settlers: The Vikings, children are immersed in activities in History, Geography, Art and Design & Technology. At the end of the topic the children will enjoy a Viking Day where they will experience and plan a Viking Invasion and Raid, experience the food of a Viking and enjoy a theatre workshop provided by Freshwater Theatre. The children will also be visiting the London Maritime Museum in Greenwich to take part in an interactive ‘Meet the Vikings’ workshop.

MyTime Active deliver weekly additional Science and P.E curriculum lessons to our Year 4 students and we are excited to be working with their MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition…Do It!) team made up of nutritionist Emily Wood and physical activities leader Jared Grey.
