What is Adoremus?
“Adoremus will be a unique opportunity for the Church to gather and reflect on the centrality of the Eucharist and particularly to explore the place of Eucharistic Adoration.” Cardinal Vincent Nichols.
Sept 7th- 9th 2018 What is the Adoremus Eucharistic Congress?
The bishops of England and Wales will hold a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in Liverpool later this year. Eucharistic Congresses are gatherings of clergy, religious and laity, which promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist of the life and mission of the Church. The last international Eucharistic Congress in England was held in 1908 when permission for a public procession of the Blessed Sacrament was refused.
Who will attend the Congress?
There will be a small representation from each parish attending. These will include: parish catechists, RE teachers, Hospital and Prison Chaplains, Seminary Communities and Extraordinary Ministers. Fr Richard and some parishioners of Our Lady of Fatima will be attending!
Fr Richard and Miss Cotton helped in contributing our experience of Christian Meditation at St John XXIII as a suggested activity for Adoremus for the Westminster Diocese’s School’s Launch Pack.
How does this affect schools?
In order for our young people to have a true understanding of Christ in the Eucharist and how this links to service in everyday life, it is essential that we work with and support our parents and parishes. Teaching the children who the Eucharist is and giving them a real and positive experience of the Blessed Sacrament will help to nurture the Church of the future.
St John XXIII will help by:
o Communicating with parents and parishes
o Explicitly teaching about the Eucharist, Adoration and Benediction
o Providing them with various positive experiences of the Blessed Sacrament
o Linking with other schools and parishes in the Diocese to make this a memorable time in the lives of our young people
o Ensuring a legacy of the Congress
What are we doing at St John XXIII?
Each half term in school we will have a different focus based around Adoremus. This will run until Summer 2019.
This upcoming Summer Term we will focus on the theme: Invitation to Adoration.
One way we will explore this theme is through our daily Christian Meditation Sessions, where we will meditate upon scripture and artwork.
The scripture for this term’s focus is from John 21:12, and the artwork is a piece called ‘Cast your nets on the Right side’ by Greg Olsen.
Upcoming Events
o Fr Fergal will lead an assembly on Adoration and the Blessed Sacrament and a Q&A session so children gain a good understanding of why this is important to us: date to be confirmed.
o Adoration with Fr Richard: Year 5 and 6 will take part in an Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Fr Richard at Our Lady of Fatima church: dates to be confirmed.
o Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Friday 8th June
o Whole School First Holy Communion Mass and Corpus Christi celebration remembering The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Friday 22nd June 9:30
What is the Blessed Sacrament?
It is Jesus under the appearance of bread and wine once it has been consecrated at Mass. It is not only a Sacrament but also a sacrifice. We call it the Blessed Sacrament, or the Eucharist.
What is the Eucharist?
Eucharist comes from the Greek word ‘eukharistia’ meaning thanksgiving. The Eucharist makes present Christ’s saving sacrifice at Calvary and unites us to Him and to each other in Holy Communion. At the Eucharist Christians remember Jesus’ death and are united with Him through bread and wine. Eucharist is another word for the Mass and Sacrament as well as the Sacred Host.
What is Adoration?
Adoration is the worship of Jesus Christ Who is present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, under the appearance of the consecrated host.
Westminster Prayer
Jesus, You are truly present
in the Most Holy Eucharist.
Help me feel Your presence
every time I visit you.
Give me Your strength
when I receive You
in Holy Communion.
And, receiving Your love,
help me take that love to others.
